Customization
Personalize FableFrog with a customizable home screen and navigation bar, 20 themes, custom app icons, home screen widgets, StandBy mode widget, customizable lock screen widget icons, adjustable text sizes, per-book playback settings, and configurable controls.
Home Screen Layout
FableFrog lets you customize the layout of your Home screen so it shows exactly what you want, in the order you want. This is a Premium feature.
Reordering Sections
Go to Settings > Home Screen to see a list of all available sections. Drag sections into your preferred order using the reorder handles. The Home screen updates immediately to reflect your new layout.
Showing and Hiding Sections
Toggle visibility on any section you don't need. Hidden sections are removed from the Home screen entirely — no empty placeholders. Toggle them back on anytime to restore them.
Available Sections
All server-powered shelves (Continue Listening, Recently Added, Discover, etc.), favorites, weekly stats, upcoming books, and release day banners can be reordered and toggled independently.
Navigation Bar
Customize which tabs appear in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. This is a Premium feature.
Choosing Tabs
Go to Settings > Navigation Bar to see all available tabs. Toggle on the ones you use and hide the ones you don't. The navigation bar updates immediately.
Tab Order
The order of tabs in the settings list determines their order in the navigation bar. Drag tabs to rearrange them to match your workflow.

Switching Themes
Go to Settings > Theme to see a grid of all 20 themes with preview swatches. Tap any theme to apply it instantly. The change takes effect across the entire app immediately.
App Icons
FableFrog offers alternate app icons so you can match the icon on your home screen to your preferred style. Alternate icons are a Premium feature.
Available Icons
- Neon: the default FableFrog icon with vibrant neon-green accents
- Sunset: warm sunset tones with orange and red gradients
- Forest: earthy green tones matching the Forest theme
More icon options will be added over time.
Changing the Icon
Go to Settings > App Icon and tap your preferred icon. iOS will confirm the change with a system prompt. The new icon appears on your home screen, in the app switcher, and in notifications.
Text Size
FableFrog supports six text size levels to accommodate different reading preferences and visual needs.
Adjusting Text Size
Navigate to Settings > Text Size and choose from XS, S, M (default), L, XL, or XXL. A live preview shows how the selected size looks before you apply it.
Impact on Layout
Text size affects all text throughout the app, including navigation labels, book titles, descriptions, chapter lists, settings, and the player interface. The layout adapts to larger text sizes by reflowing content rather than truncating it, ensuring readability is never sacrificed.
Playback Preferences
Global playback settings establish your defaults. All of these can be overridden on a per-book basis (see below).
Default Speed
Set your preferred playback speed from 0.5x to 3.0x in 0.25x increments. This speed is applied to every new book you start unless you set a per-book override.
Volume Boost
Set a default volume boost level from 0% to 200%. This amplifies audio output above the normal maximum, useful for consistently quiet recordings.
Skip Durations
Configure how far the skip buttons jump using custom hour/minute/second duration pickers. Set any duration you want for both skip forward and skip backward — no more choosing from fixed presets.
Headphone Double-Press
Choose what happens when you double-press the play/pause button on your headphones:
- Skip to next chapter: jump ahead to the beginning of the next chapter
- Create a bookmark: save a bookmark at the current position without interrupting playback
Headphone Triple-Press
Choose what happens when you triple-press the play/pause button on your headphones:
- Skip Back (default): jump backward by your configured Skip Backward seconds — matches the behavior of Overcast, Castro, Pocket Casts, and Apple Books
- Previous Chapter: jump to the beginning of the previous chapter
Player Action Buttons
Customize which actions appear in the bottom row of the player (and in what order). Available actions include Speed, Volume Boost, Sleep Timer, Car Mode, Bookmark, Listening Activity, and Book Details. Configure the global default in Settings > Playback > Player Actions, and override the layout per book from its Book Settings if a specific title needs different controls.
Scrubber Auto-Lock
Enable scrubber auto-lock to prevent accidental seeking. When enabled, the scrubber locks after a configurable delay of 10 to 60 seconds. See Playback > Scrubber Auto-Lock for details.
Shake to Extend
Toggle whether shaking your phone extends an expired sleep timer. When enabled, a shake adds the original timer duration to the remaining time (shake-to-extend is limited to after the timer has expired so it won't trigger mid-playback). Shake sensitivity is adjustable, with a built-in test button (including haptic feedback on a successful shake) so you can dial in the right threshold. Per-book overrides are supported for titles that deserve different rules.
Automatic Sleep Timer
Enable an automatic sleep timer with a time window (e.g. 10 PM to 6 AM). Whenever you start playback inside that window, a timer is set for you. Pick Duration or End of Chapter mode, with per-book overrides. Manual timers you set yourself always take precedence. See Playback > Automatic Sleep Timer for the full setup.
Listening Goal
Set a daily listening goal in minutes. Your progress toward this goal is shown on the Home screen's weekly stats section. The goal is purely motivational and doesn't trigger any notifications or restrictions.
Per-Book Settings
Any global playback setting can be overridden for a specific book. This is useful when different books demand different listening configurations. Per-book overrides are stored on your device because the Audiobookshelf API does not support them. They persist across sign-out and are tied to your account, so they're restored automatically when you sign back in.
Setting Overrides
Open a book's detail page and navigate to its playback settings. You can override:
- Playback speed: listen to dense material slower, light material faster
- Volume boost: compensate for quiet narrators on specific titles
- Skip forward / backward durations: adjust for books with shorter or longer chapters
- Scrubber auto-lock delay: change the lock timing for specific titles
- Player action buttons: pick which actions appear in the player's bottom row for this book
- Automatic sleep timer: disable or customize the auto timer type and duration per book
- Shake sensitivity: tweak how hard you need to shake to extend the sleep timer for this book
- Headphone double- and triple-press: override what each headphone gesture does for this book
Per-book overrides are shown with a visual indicator in the player so you always know when a non-default setting is active.
Resetting to Defaults
On the per-book settings screen, tap Reset to Defaults to clear all overrides for that book. It will revert to using your global playback preferences.
Widget Icon
The lock screen widget displays a circular progress gauge for your current audiobook. You can customize the icon shown inside the gauge to match your style.
Available Widget Icons
- Frog: the default FableFrog frog silhouette (Free)
- Frog Foot: a frog footprint silhouette (Premium)
- Headphones: a headphones icon with audio bars (Premium)
- Sound Library: a music note inside a rounded rectangle (Premium)
Changing the Widget Icon
Go to Settings > Appearance > Widget Icon and tap your preferred icon. The lock screen widget updates instantly — no need to remove and re-add it. Lock screen widgets render in iOS monochrome template mode, so the icon automatically adapts to your system appearance.
Resetting on Sign-Out
When you sign out, the widget icon resets to the default Frog. Your preference is restored when you sign back in to the same account.
Home Screen Widgets
FableFrog offers six home screen widgets that bring your library to your home screen. Add them like any other iOS widget: long-press your home screen, tap the "+" button, and search for FableFrog.
Free Widgets
- Now Playing (small/medium): Shows your current book's cover art, chapter info, and a circular progress ring. The medium size adds an interactive play/pause button. Tap to open the player.
- Continue Listening (medium/large): Displays your in-progress books with cover art and progress bars. Tap any book to deep-link directly to it in the player.
- Upcoming Books (small/medium/large): Shows countdown badges for upcoming releases from series you follow. Badges are color-coded by urgency — green for under 7 days, orange for under 30. Cover art is fetched from Audible.
Premium Widgets
- Daily Goal (small/medium): A circular progress ring tracking your daily listening goal, with 7-day goal dots showing your recent consistency.
- Listening Stats (small/medium/large): Today's listening time, your current streak, a 7-day bar chart, books finished, and weekly total — all at a glance.
- Streak (small): A compact widget showing your listening streak count with a flame icon and 7-day activity dots.
Widget Theming
Your selected theme now applies to all home screen widgets. When you change your theme in the app, widget colors update to match — accent colors, backgrounds, and text all reflect your current theme choice. This applies to all six widget types.
Widget Data
Widgets share data with the main app through an App Group. Cover art is cached in a shared container, and snapshots of your listening state are written when you use the app. No tokens, credentials, or sensitive data are shared with the widget extension. All widget data is cleared when you sign out.
StandBy Mode Widget
iOS 17+ StandBy mode turns your iPhone into a bedside display when charging on its side. FableFrog includes a dedicated widget optimized for this use case.
What It Shows
The StandBy widget displays full-bleed cover art for your current book, chapter progress (e.g., "Ch 5 of 22"), a progress bar, and skip back / play-pause / skip forward controls. It respects your chapter vs. book timeframe toggle and per-book skip duration settings.
Theme Awareness
The widget reads your selected app theme via the shared App Group, so its colors match whatever theme you're using in the app.
Cover Icons
Cover icons are small overlay badges displayed on book covers throughout the library.
What They Show
Cover icons indicate status at a glance:
- Download status: whether a book is downloaded, downloading, or has a failed download
- Completion status: whether a book is finished
- Series status: series cards display followed (bell) and abandoned (slashed bookmark) icons next to the title
Toggling Visibility
If you prefer a cleaner library view without overlay icons, go to Settings and toggle Cover Icons off. The information is still available on each book's detail page; this setting only controls the overlay badges on cover thumbnails.
