It Comes to You

“Following a series told you when a book landed in your library, which is the last moment you'd want to hear about it. Now FableFrog tells you the day the book is announced - often months before it exists anywhere near your shelf - and can download it for you when it finally arrives, so the first you hear of it is that it's already on your phone. Home can glow when something new is waiting. And the player stopped spinning for half a minute after iOS quietly restarted its audio service underneath it.”

New

  • Alerts Before the Book Exists - Every notification FableFrog could send you was about your own library: a book landed, a book releases today. New Upcoming Release is the first one that isn't. It fires the first time a book is seen announced in a series you follow, months before anyone can buy it, and it's on by default. Its neighbor, Release Date Changed, fires when an announced date moves by a week or more - and starts off, because a publisher can slide a date four times before the book is real. Both live in Settings → Notifications, and both are capped at three alerts per check: past that, a run of announcements collapses into one line rather than a stack of them
  • A Cover You Can Recognize From the Lock Screen - An alert about a single book carries that book's cover art, so you know what it is without unlocking anything. A digest naming four books doesn't, because there's no honest single image for four books
  • Download New Releases - Settings → Storage & Cache has a new switch. Turn it on and a book from a series you follow downloads itself as it lands on your server, so the first you hear about the thing you'd been waiting for is that it's already on your phone. It starts from the day you turn it on, obeys Wi-Fi Only, and adds what it downloads to your Reading List (a book you removed by hand stays removed - it's still downloaded, just not put back). A book that can't be fetched right now is set aside and tried again rather than blocking everything queued behind it (Premium)
  • Home Can Tell You Something Is Waiting - The Upcoming Books row on Home used to look identical whether nothing had happened or six books had been announced since you last looked. Settings → Home Screen → New Release Emphasis now offers Glow (tints the row and counts what's new, the default), Preview (that plus the covers of up to three of them), and Off (exactly the row you have today). It counts arrivals only - a date that moved doesn't add to it, because the page behind the count has to be able to show you whatever the count claims. Opening Upcoming Books clears it. Free for everyone
  • Mint and Sapphire - Two new app icons. Mint is a flat mint frog on black; Sapphire is a blue frog on a radial navy gradient (Premium)
  • A Sapphire Theme - The palette is lifted out of the icon rather than invented next to it: the icon's own gradient supplies the background, and the frog's blue becomes the accent. Every text pair clears WCAG AAA (Premium)
  • Add to Reading List, From the Book - Book detail could always queue a book, but only from the 3-dot menu, under Abandon Series and Add to Playlist. It's now a button in the action row beside Play, Read and Download, and it fills in the moment you tap it (Premium)
  • Every Book You Own in a Series - Ready to Listen shows the next unfinished book per series, which is the right answer when you're picking something to start and the wrong one when you're four books behind. The page's 3-dot menu now has Show All Books Per Series, which expands each series to every book you own and haven't finished. Series stay together and are still ranked by the book you'd actually open. It's a per-device display choice
  • Release Setup - After the What's New screen, a release can walk you through the choices it just gave you - here, the Home emphasis, the two release alerts, and the new icons. It can only confirm or change something that's already live with a default; it can never switch anything on behind you, and skipping it leaves you in exactly the same place as finishing it. Improved

  • "New Book in Followed Series" Is Now "Added to Your Library" - The old alert fires when a book reaches your server. The two new ones fire when a book is announced on Audible. Under the old name all three read as the same event, and one of them promised something you could act on that you couldn't. Your setting is unchanged - only the label moved
  • "Add Downloads Automatically" Is Now "Add Downloads You Start" - The old name promised to cover every automatic download, and Download New Releases now adds its books to your Reading List whether that toggle is on or off. The name says what it covers. Your setting is unchanged
  • The Sleep Timer Menu Comes Out of the Clock - The duration options used to land across the cover art with no visible relationship to the button you tapped. They now rise out of the clock button itself
  • Clearing Downloads Doesn't Slow Down - Clear All Data and bulk removals worked through your downloads one file at a time, each with its own scan of the downloads directory and its own announcement. A library of a few hundred books made that visible. The scan happens once per refresh and the removal happens in one pass

Fixed

  • Playback Recovers From an Audio Service Restart - iOS restarts its media services in the background sometimes, which left FableFrog holding a dead player it had no idea was dead. Pressing play then did nothing for 30 seconds and failed - on a book already sitting on your device, with no network involved and nothing on screen to explain it. The player now rebuilds itself when that happens
  • A Resume After That Doesn't Rewind You - The same failure left a stale position anchor behind, so the recovery handed you back to wherever you'd started listening rather than where you'd got to. The anchor is retired once playback actually resumes
  • Listening You Did Somewhere Else Counts - Listen on the Audiobookshelf web player or another device, come back, press play, and this device would put you back where it left off - then push that older position over the newer one on the server. Downloaded books included. FableFrog fetched the server's record correctly but ranked it with a timestamp that could be hours stale, so fresh data lost to a stale clock. It now ranks a fetched record by its own write time
  • Progress Bars Update From the Same Check - The record fetched to decide where to resume was used and thrown away, so shelves, progress bars and Continue Listening kept showing what the app knew at launch while the player was already playing from a newer position. That record is now folded back in, through the write path that can only move knowledge forward
  • A Release Date That Lands on the Right Day - Audible publishes a release date, and FableFrog stored the moment that date began in UTC. Anywhere west of Greenwich, rendering that moment locally put the book out a day early. Everything downstream inherited it: the countdown, the pre-release reminders, and the event Add to Calendar wrote. Dates are now handled as calendar days
  • Reminders for Books You Stopped Waiting On - Unfollow a series, or have Audible drop a book from its listing, and the release-day and pre-release reminders scheduled for those books stayed scheduled. They'd arrive months later for a book you no longer expected. A reminder the latest check can't still vouch for is taken back
  • Diagnostic Logs in the Order Things Happened - The export was sorted by timestamp, and the timestamp had one-second resolution. Everything written inside the same second came back shuffled, which is exactly the second you're looking at when you export a log. Entries now carry their write order
  • Reordering Your Reading List Moves the Book You Dragged - The reorder was applied by list position rather than by the book at that position, so if the list had changed underneath you - a download finished, a book was marked finished - the drag moved the wrong row (Premium)
  • An Open Reading List Keeps Up - Finish a book and it would leave the list, but only after you navigated away and came back. Same for a finished download joining it. The open page now keeps itself current (Premium)
  • Move to Top Doesn't Drag the Unreleased Books With It - Using the move-to-top button on the last book of the list hauled the run of unreleased entries at the end up along with it (Premium)
  • Series Cards on Home Are the Same Height - Cards sized themselves to their contents, so a series holding a single book got a shorter card and lost its title and most of its cover to the crop
  • Listen Again Actually Listens Again - Starting a finished book over quietly un-marked it as finished, which is not what you asked for. And if its download had already been cleaned up, it did nothing at all - no playback, no error, no explanation. The book stays finished, and it plays
  • The Sleep Timer Badge Sits Inside the Cover - It was hugging the top edge of the cover art rather than sitting within it
